The President-elect of the United States said yesterday that he will impose a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada, and 10% on Chinese products.
The President-elect of the United States, Donald Trumppromised this Monday that all Mexican and Canadian goods will be affected by a 25% rate in retaliation for “the flow of drugs and illegal immigration” and was considering another of the following 10% on Chinese products until that country stops the arrival of fentanyl.
As highlighted on his Truth Social platform, one of his first executive orders after taking power on January 20 will be to sign the necessary documents to apply a 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada on all of their products entering the United States. That tariff will remain in place until what he described as “the invasion of drugs and undocumented immigrants” ends.
“Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long-simmering problem. We demand that they use this power, and until they do, it is time for them to pay a very high price!”
Similarly, Trump added that he has had “a lot of conversations” with Trump China about the “huge amount of drugs, especially fentanyl,” which he emphasized is being sent to the United States. “But it was in vain. Representatives from China told me that they would impose their maximum penalty, the death penalty, for any drug trafficker caught, but unfortunately they never implemented it and the drugs reach our country mainly through Mexico. at levels never seen before,” he said.
The US president stressed that “until the flow of drugs stops” he will impose an additional 10% tariff on China, on top of any other existing tariff, on all its products entering the country.
It didn’t take long for the Chinese response. The spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in the United States has assured that “no one will win a trade or tariff war.” “The economic and trade cooperation between China and the US is mutually beneficial. No one will win a trade or tariff war,” Liu Pengyu, spokesman for the Chinese legation in Washington, said on his official account on the social network X.
