Krone journalist Mark Perry, who was present at the COP-29 in Baku, sharply criticized the results of the UN climate conference in Baku in an interview with krone.tv: “I am also disappointed. It was just a bunch of shards. We worked thirty hours of overtime and the fossil lobby dominated everything.”
Perry continued: “But because it’s also about the wealthy North’s $300 billion a year for climate protection measures in the global South: I’ve been to these countries many times. Ivory Coast, Ethiopia, South Africa, to name a few. And there they must finally do their homework and not allow the rainforests to be cut down unchecked. So it’s not that simple.”
Fossil forces have prevailed
However, the lack of climate protection measures is not primarily because there is not enough money available in the southern countries. Many countries in the South need to be much more active in climate protection measures and tackle the root cause of the problem. Perry: “The fossil fuel powers certainly got their way. That was the case in Dubai last year. And now the conference in Azerbaijan, which is not exactly a center for bioenergy or biomass. But they are actually sitting on a huge gas bubble.”
In any case, Perry had the impression on the spot that “no progress has been made whatsoever.” China currently leads the world in renewable energy production. He hopes that China will continue to play a leading role in climate policy. The US, on the other hand, is about to turn things around again. In Austria, the expansion of solar photovoltaics is already well advanced. Perry: “But in reality, an active climate policy is a matter for all of us.”
