His “victory plan” includes Ukraine joining NATO. According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, the survival of his country depends on this. The 46-year-old head of state clearly rejected NATO membership without the areas currently occupied by Russia during a meeting with the new EU leadership on Sunday.
“There can be no question of an invitation from only one part (of Ukraine) to NATO,” Zelensky said at a news conference with António Costa, the new president of the European Council, in Kiev. This would amount to recognizing the loss of the territories currently controlled by Russia. “Ukraine will never agree to this,” the Ukrainian emphasized. Therefore, only an invitation to Ukraine within internationally recognized borders is an option. In a recent interview, Zelenskyy raised NATO security guarantees only for the parts of Ukraine controlled by Kiev.
“Clear message” from the EU
Costa was accompanied on his visit to Kiev by the EU’s new foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, and the new EU enlargement commissioner, Marta Kos. She will be responsible for the accession negotiations with Ukraine in the coming years. How long they will last and whether they can even be brought to a successful conclusion remains to be seen.
However, the Brussels trio made it unmistakably clear: “We have come to send a clear message: we stand with Ukraine and will continue our full support for Ukraine.” This includes humanitarian, financial, military and diplomatic assistance.
