High-tech billionaire Elon Musk backed Republican Donald Trump’s election campaign with more than $270 million, making him the largest donor in the history of American politics.
It was said that the equivalent of 37.8 million euros had been paid on the day of the presidential election on November 5. According to the non-governmental organization OpenSecrets, this is the largest amount ever donated by a single donor.
According to the Washington Post, Musk exceeded the amount that banking heir Tim Mellon provided to Trump in this year’s election campaign by $80 million.
Musk may ‘co-govern’ for a windfall
Trump has appointed the head of electric car maker Tesla and space company SpaceX to head a new department for efficient government. Together with businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, Musk will act as an external advisor to the government to ensure that hundreds of billions of dollars are saved in the government apparatus.
- Through his alliance with the right-wing populist, the high-tech entrepreneur and richest person in the world now has significant influence over the US government, raising the question of massive conflicts of interest. He could use his work as a government adviser to promote the elimination of the authorities that regulate his companies.
- His work could also lead to further contracts for his own companies. SpaceX sends military satellites into space, brings astronauts to the ISS space station and is in many ways intertwined with the Pentagon and NASA. According to information from the New York Times, the Musk companies received government contracts worth three billion dollars (2.85 billion euros) last year alone.
Musk must help Trump reduce government spending
He is expected to take over the leadership of a specially created advisory committee with former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. Musk and Ramaswamy’s work is expected to be completed by July 2026.
Republican Trump clearly won the presidential election. On January 20, he will be sworn in as president of the US for the second time.
