President Yoon Suk-yeol has been banned from traveling abroad by South Korean authorities. He is currently not allowed to leave the country. The reason is an investigation against him due to the brief imposition of martial law.
South Korea’s national crisis continued to worsen this weekend. Police arrested outgoing Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun on Sunday. He is said to have recommended the introduction of martial law and ordered troops to be sent to parliament.
Yoon followed Yong-hyun’s advice and unexpectedly declared martial law on Tuesday.
Martial law was lifted after six hours
He justified this by accusing the opposition of being a stooge of communist North Korea and having paralyzed the parliamentary process to plunge the country into crisis. After massive protests, he lifted martial law after six hours.
On Saturday, Yoon survived an opposition attempt at impeachment proceedings as his ruling People Power Party (PPP) stayed away from the parliamentary vote.
The conservative PPP wants to hand over state affairs to Prime Minister Han Duck-soo until Yoon steps down. The president has so far refused to resign.
