Former FPÖ top politician Hans-Jörg Jenewein is now facing new charges. The Viennese public prosecutor’s office accuses the 50-year-old of obtaining secret documents from the Ministry of the Interior through a similarly accused official and passing them on to journalists.
In concrete terms, this concerns documents from two meetings between European intelligence and intelligence services and confidential e-mail traffic from the Ministry of the Interior. The information was passed on between October 30, 2018 and May 9, 2019, when Jenewein was a member of the BVT investigative committee.
As an ‘intended perpetrator’, he is said to have persuaded the main defendant to hand over the confidential documents, including a protocol of the witness interrogation of SPÖ politician Franz Schnabl. The punishment ranges from six months to five years in prison. In connection with the BVT affair, the politician is also accused of violating official secrecy.
