On December 23, an agreement was reached within the Basque Transport Authority on free transport for children under 12 years old, which would benefit around 130,400 girls and boys.
The Basque Transport Authority (ATE) agreed last December to… free for children up to 12 years and extend the 50% discounts on the public transport. The measures will be implemented gradually.
They announced that yesterday AlavaFrom Tuesday 7 January, children under 12 can travel for free, provided they use a personalized BAT card.
This measure benefits users of regional buses and Alavabus regional transport and the Vitoria-Gasteiz tram. Children under the age of 12 now travel for free on Tuvisa city buses. Euskotren, which runs the tram in the capital Alava, has introduced a transition period until February so that minors who do not have a personalized card can get one. Until then, they can travel for free without validating a ticket, but they must prove their age if a tram agent asks them to do so.
After Álava, the measure will be extended to public transport in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa in the coming weeks.
