Criticism of the government – Why the Syrians do not want to go home yet

Date:

The Assad regime is history. For many Syrians in Austria, the dictator was the main reason for fleeing. However, only a few dozen have returned home. Many do not want to go home yet and do not skimp on criticizing the government.

Currently, about 100,000 Syrians live in Austria, most of them in Vienna. Many cited fleeing the Assad regime as a reason for asylum. This is history. What prevents refugees from returning? The federal government also wondered this and froze all asylum procedures. For voluntary return there is even a bonus of 1000 euros and help from the “state travel agency”. Success has not yet been achieved. Currently, the number of voluntary departures is estimated to be in the double digits.

Strong criticism of the government’s actions
Those affected and experts also express strong criticism. “Our phones got hot during the holidays. Syrians in Austria are restless. Even minors believe they will now be deported,” said Abdulhkeem Alshater of the Austro-Syrian Association. Because at the moment returning is not yet an option for many Syrians.

“Weapons are still everywhere”
Alshater describes the situation on the ground: “The weapons are everywhere. Fear reigns in my city Homs. Armed supporters of the Assad regime control the streets, and the traces of violence are everywhere.” The current discussion is also going in the wrong direction for him: “There are so many Assad criminals in Europe. You have asylum here and can live here freely. We collected a lot of photos and information about her.”

Don’t overwhelm the country
Migration expert Judith Kohlenberger sees returns without sustainable measures to stabilize Syria as counterproductive: “If the country is overwhelmed by uncoordinated return movements, this could cause new tensions and conflicts.” Lukas Gahleitner-Gertz of the Asylum Coordination: “The rule of law requires that this protection status can only be withdrawn in the event of a lasting improvement in the situation. That cannot be the case in Syria.”
Whether there will be major return movements will become clear in the coming months.
