The “Krone” reported it before the turn of the year, now it is official: the Governor of Salzburg, Wilfried Haslauer (ÖVP) is withdrawing from politics, Karoline Edtstadler will take over in July. There’s a press conference going on right now – we’re reporting live…
Karoline Edtstadler or ‘Crown Prince’ Stefan Schnöll? There was speculation about the successor for months. Now it is certain: the former ÖVP minister will succeed the former governor of Salzburg, Wilfried Haslauer, this summer. Schnöll becomes her deputy.
Haslauer said at a press conference at the ÖVP headquarters in Salzburg: “I announced a long time ago that I would no longer run for the 2028 state elections. This is the right time to create clarity. I will step down from my role as state governor on July 2 and from my role as state party chairman at the end of January.”
Haslauer won the seat after a financial scandal
Haslauer had been governor of the state since 2013. He regained the presidency of state leader of the SPÖ in early elections. The reason was the financial scandal in Salzburg. After initially governing together with the Greens and Team Stronach, a coalition with the Greens and NEOS followed.
Since the spring of 2023, he has been part of a government with the FPÖ. Contrary to popular belief, he never ruled out a collaboration with the Blues, but sharply criticized them during the election campaign. After major ÖVP losses and FPÖ gains, the black-blue coalition was quickly negotiated.
