The European Union has polled its citizens on agricultural policy issues; encouraging results came from 27 Member States. For Austrians, the ecological work of farmers remains a high priority!
Not only is the calendar for young farmers popular with the general public, the agricultural topics themselves are also exciting. After all, the CAP is the common agricultural policy of the 27 EU countries. One of the few points here is that all countries involved agree in principle on financing, processing, etc., which is why the budget pools for rural areas are disproportionately large.
According to the latest Eurobarometer survey, support for this has reached a record high (see graph). Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen explains: “Our citizens trust our policies to help farmers deliver safe food and implement environmentally friendly practices.”
Climate change and war as threats to prosperity
The focus of the public interest is of course on the safe supply of high-quality food – about 80 percent in Austria – and the welfare of farm animals and the climate. However, the greatest risks are extreme weather events, but also climate change, land use and wars.
The survey also shows that there is a strong appreciation for farmers among EU citizens, with 92 percent saying that agriculture and rural areas in the EU are important for our future. More than half say the level of financial support to farmers to stabilize their income is good, which is the highest level since 2013. Environmentally friendly processes should – in the spirit of “climate protection is sexy” – even be better paid, but pure area bonuses should not be in the interest of taxpayers.
