Scandal in the election campaign – the mayor’s ‘head’ ended up in the cemetery

Date:

A poster destroyed, the mayor’s car covered in paint: vandals are now overshadowing the election campaign in Herzogenburg in the St. Pölten district. The opposition is also angry.

The election campaign showed its ugly side at the end of last week in Herzogenburg in the St. Pölten district. SPÖ mayor Christoph Artner (38), who managed to regain the absolute majority in 2020, is the target of unknown vandals. In the cadastral community of St. Andrä, the 38-year-old’s private car was covered with black paint overnight. A little later, the politician’s portrait was found in the cemetery. The ‘mayor’s head’ had previously been cut out of a nearby election poster.

Be strict but fair
“Political electoral disputes can be tough, but they must always remain fair. Such a cowardly action must be condemned,” said Artner and his comrades, who filed a complaint and at the same time launched a call for witnesses. Herbert Pfeffer, party member and mayor of the neighboring town of Traismauer, is also shocked: “Such cases of vandalism are far from a stupid joke! I hope these two incidents were just fragments in the run-up to the municipal elections.”

The opposition is critical of incidents
The other parties also reacted with shock to the incidents in the Stiftstadt. “If boundaries are crossed, the color of the party can no longer play a role,” the People’s Party said. The FPÖ, whose posters have already been destroyed, also strongly condemns the actions, but cannot resist a lashing out: “Such attacks happen to us every election campaign. But there will never be a protest from the SPÖ if it does not affect them themselves.”
