Trump promises: Kennedy assassination: files must be made public

Date:

Future US President Donald Trump wants to make documents “on subjects of great public importance” accessible. These include files on the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy in 1963 and civil rights activist Martin Luther King in 1968, which remain classified.

“Everything is being tried,” the Republican said on Sunday during a rally for cheering supporters in the capital Washington. In Kennedy’s case, the majority of the approximately five million documents, photos, videos, audio recordings and artifacts related to the assassination attempt have been fully accessible since the late 1990s.

In 2017, some of the previously kept secret documents were made public. However, at the instigation of the American foreign secret service CIA and the Federal Police FBI, then President Trump decided to keep some files under lock and key. Authorities had previously expressed safety concerns.

99 percent already accessible
Trump’s successor Biden subsequently released thousands of documents related to Kennedy’s assassination. According to US media reports, 99 percent are currently publicly accessible. Kennedy was killed with multiple gunshots in Dallas on November 22, 1962. Investigation revealed that the murderer Lee Harvey Oswald, who later killed himself, acted alone.

A number of conspiracy theories have persisted over the years, including the theory that the Cuban government was involved or that Kennedy’s successor Lyndon B. Johnson pulled the strings along with the CIA.
