Former President of the Federal Council Todt died at the age of 75

Former President of the Federal Council Reinhard Todt has died at the age of 75. The SPÖ politician was a member of the state chamber for seventeen years and only left it in 2018. Todt can look back on a long career in social democracy. Former SPÖ colleagues are deeply affected.

He was born in Upper Austria and was, among other things, chairman of the SPÖ Federal Council faction for a long time, senior secretary of the SPÖ Vienna and general secretary of the Austrian Pensioners’ Association. The Viennese Social Democrats expressed their sadness on Monday over the death of their former comrade.

Ludwig: “Loyal and reliable comrade”
“With Reinhard Todt we lose a tireless comrade in arms for social justice. His decades-long commitment to Viennese social democracy has had a significant impact on our organization. I will always have special memories of his time as an employee of the state organization SPÖ on Löwelstrasse. Reinhard was a loyal, reliable and dedicated colleague and comrade,” said Mayor Dr. Michael Ludwig.

Rudolf Kaske, party leader of the Simmeringer SPÖ, added: “I was closely associated with Reinhard for more than fifty years, both politically and as a friend. Reinhard as a person and his valuable work for Simmering will not be forgotten. We will all miss him very much.”

“Reinhard Todt leaves a big hole in our movement,” said Barbara Novak, state party secretary of SPÖ Vienna, in tribute to the deceased. “From an early age, Reinhard Todt was always loyal to social democracy. Whether as district secretary in Simmering, as senior secretary at the SPÖ state organization, as district councilor or federal councilor – Reinhard Todt was a social democrat through and through who always fought for the values ​​of our party. Our condolences go out to his family and loved ones during these difficult times.”

Looks back on a long social democratic career
Originally trained as a machine mechanic, Reinhard Todt initially became involved in the social democratic youth movement, where he worked from 1972 as youth secretary of the SPÖ Salzburg and then as association secretary of the Socialist Youth Austria. From 1988 to 1998 Reinhard Todt was district secretary of the SPÖ Simmering, from 1989 to 2001 district councilor of Simmering before moving to the Federal Council in 2001. For ten years, from 1998 to 2008, Todt held the position of chief organizational secretary at the SPÖ Vienna. He received the Viktor Eagle plaque and the Grand Silver Decoration for services to the Republic of Austria.

Public condolences were expressed by President of the National Council Walter Rosenkranz (FPÖ), SPÖ leader Andreas Babler, Mayor of Vienna Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) and the SP Pensioners Association, of which Todt was general secretary for several years.
