Kaja Kallas, EU foreign policy chief, warns: Within three to five years, the EU could face an attack from Russia. It is based on assessments by the secret services of various Member States.
“Many of our national intelligence services are giving us information that Russia could test the EU’s defense preparedness within three to five years,” the former Estonian head of government said at a European Defense Agency event in Brussels on Wednesday. The EU must spend money to prevent war and prepare for war.
“Europe’s inability to invest in military capabilities also sends a dangerous signal to the aggressor. Weakness invites him,” Kallas emphasized.
Kallas agrees with Trump
In this context, the 47-year-old politician agreed with US President Donald Trump, who is demanding more money for defense budgets from NATO partners. Last year, EU member states spent an average of 1.9 percent of their gross domestic product on defense. Russia, on the other hand, spends nine percent. Kallas gave no details about Russia’s possible plans. However, she believed that the war in Ukraine was a time-saver for the EU.
Regarding the EU’s support to Ukraine, she announced that a sixteenth package of Russian sanctions is currently being prepared and that she is committed to more efficient use of frozen Russian assets for Ukraine.
