Expansion by 2030 – Elga will also store X-Ray images from July

Date:

From July, the electronic health record (ELGA) should also be rescued from laboratory and radiology. For the time being, only resident doctors are involved, from 2026 the obligation will also apply to hospitals.

From July 1, 2025, laboratory and radiology findings as well as the associated X-ray MR and CT images are included. The expansion of the Electronic Health Record (ELGA) should be done in several phases: from January 1, 2026, all relevant health data should ultimately be stored in the ELGA, provided that no specific special requirements are to be observed. These include laboratory and radiological findings from hospitals, medication prescriptions from freelance doctors and care reports from nursing homes.

Pathological findings follow
At the beginning of 2028, hospitals and resident physicians must also save pathological findings, from January 1, 2030, other specialists.

Patients would have access to their full medical findings at any time, the Health Ministry said in a broadcast on Saturday. This also allows for more efficient communication between treating physicians, reducing the risk of interactions and misdiagnoses. All diagnoses would also be available in emergency situations or when looking for a new doctor.

Rauch: “Handy health portal”
Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens) spoke of an “important step” to expand Elga into a “useful health portal”. “The results will gradually become visible in the coming years.” A new government will not tip the scheme, he says.

“It is incomprehensible to many people who had to constantly find and take documents with them every time they visit a healthcare provider, just because digital interfaces were not present. With this amendment, there is now a clear sequence to create and implement these interfaces,” said Greens health spokesperson Ralph Schallmeiner. The amendment to the Elga regulation will come into force tomorrow.
