The FPÖ convenes the National Security Council because of the “drasically deteriorating situation in the gas supply”. Party leader Herbert Kickl announced a corresponding request on Monday. Earlier, the Ministry of Energy announced that less natural gas had been stored in recent days.
The government wants to discuss this on Tuesday, from which Herbert Kickl only expects “hot air”. “The ‘swallowing’ and secrecy of the government will get us nowhere,” said the politician. Energy Minister Leonore Gewessler’s (Greens) “appeasing statements” about security of supply would have left more questions unanswered for the FPÖ than they have answered. This spoke, for example, of the fact that the alert level did not have to be declared for the time being – which would mean that the industry would have to save gas – and that construction of storage facilities was progressing. However, Austria has been in the early warning phase since March 30.
Criticism of sanctions against Russia
According to the FPÖ, the National Security Council must now promptly deal with the status of the gas supply. To do that, a corresponding request must be on the table of Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) on Monday. In this context, Kickl once again criticized the sanctions against Russia, which would increasingly become a ‘knee shot’. The situation with regard to the security of supply of oil and gas would become increasingly critical. “These stupid sanctions mean that people can no longer afford their lives,” the politician wrote on Instagram a few days ago.
