After the Waldhäusl scandal – Viennese school class on FPÖ seats in parliament

Date:

The scandalous statement by Lower Austrian FPÖ state councilor Gottfried Waldhäusl against schoolchildren with a migration background caused a wave of outrage – and solidarity. Politicians from all other parties condemned the verdict, MPs from the Greens invited the school class to parliament on Thursday.

On Tuesday evening, a student of this 6th class from Vienna-Favoriten referred to the migration background of herself and her classmates in the Puls 4 program “Pro und Contra” and emphasized that they would not be in Vienna if Waldhäusl’s ideas on the subject of asylum executed. The liberal’s answer: “To the question, if that had already happened, that very many were not at school here: Vienna would still be Vienna.”

“Discrimination”
“We are all Vienna, we are all Austria,” Ewa Ernst-Dziedzic, member of the Green National Council, refuted Waldhäusl’s statement on Twitter. She posted a video from the National Council meeting room, which the students “who have been racially abused by a State Council” visited on Thursday afternoon. They accepted the invitation from Ernst-Dziedzic and her colleague Barbara Neßler – and sat down in the chairs of the FPÖ deputies.

Justice Minister Alma Zadic (Greens), who had already condemned Waldhäusl’s testimony on Wednesday, was also present in parliament. This was “absolutely despicable and unacceptable,” she said. That’s why it’s so important to get up and show the students: “You are Vienna” (see video above).

“This Landesrat Waldhäusl has no place in a political office,” Ernst-Dziedzic demanded the liberal politician’s resignation. The SPÖ had previously asked for this, and the red mayor of Vienna, Michael Ludwig, also invited the school class to his town hall. The PVV did not comment on the cause on Thursday.

Minister Raab encouraged schoolgirls
Integration Minister Susanne Raab (ÖVP) also condemned Gottfried Waldhäusl’s Sager on Thursday. She called the class and “told the students that this is not their understanding of integration,” Raab’s office said.

She especially encouraged the girls in the school class. “Integration is not about origin and skin color, but about what everyone wants to contribute to our society, does and how you participate,” the minister emphasized.
