“Nerve war” – hostages remain the most important means of pressure in Hamas

Date:

The Islamist Hamas initially stopped the release of other Israeli hostages. This can have various reasons to improve the negotiating position in discussions with the Israeli government. There are signs that Hamas could still admit.

To secure its rule, the Palestinian organization initially wants an agreement on a permanent end of the war in the Gaza Strip. Finally, however, the impression was that the government of Israel delays negotiations on the second phase of the cease -the fire agreement that should achieve this. Many analysts see the announcement about the stop of the release of further kidnapped as an attempt to improve the negotiating position.

According to them, the resumption of the fighting would be a disaster for citizens in the Gaza Strip. Many of them have just returned to their largely destroyed residential areas in the north. The Israeli expert Avi Melamed speaks about a “nerve war” between Israel and Hamas.

Netanyahu under pressure under domestic policy
The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could, however, be forced to resume war against Hamas. If he agrees with a second phase of the Stakes-Fire Agreement, his right-wing religious coalition would probably break. The ultra -right partners ask for more fighting.

New elections would be a disaster for Netanyahu. The public blamed him for the fact that the hostages have stayed in the prisoner for so long and that the condition of the last three people is so bad, Melamed said. With the destruction of Hamas and the release of the hostages, the Israeli government strives for two goals that would rule out each other.

76 hostages are still violent from Hamas, according to which, according to estimates, a maximum of 40 is still alive. They remain the most important means of pressure from Hamas to Israel.
