John Bolton, the former national security adviser of US President Donald Trump, sees no major strategy behind his first official actions since they returned to the White House.
“He follows his instincts, who always deal with transaction – and about what he uses personally,” said Bolton of the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” (FAZ). Regardless of whether it is about rates, NATO or Ukraine – whoever believes, Trump follows a philosophy will eventually be disappointed. “Everything around Trump is chaos because his thinking is chaotic.”
The former security adviser remained the FAZ that he also does not recognize an economic strategy in the arrival and circles of rates for goods from Canada, Mexico, China or the EU. The result is that “Trump plays the capital of America: trust in the good will of the country in international politics.” This also does not include a military coercion to maintain Greenland or control over the Panama channel.
“Sometimes he also invents things”
When asked what Trump is planning for the Ukraine war, Bolton said, there were certainly conversations in the background. Trump said he spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin, although there was no proof of this. “Sometimes he also comes up with things.” There are probably discussions at the lower level, possibly by the special representative Keith Kellogg or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, says Bolton.
In general he was very concerned. In the election campaign, the current Vice President, JD Vance, spoke about a ceasefiring -fires based on the current fronts and that Kiev had to do without NATO membership. “The Kremlin could not want anything better.”
Bolton: cutting with development aid saves little
In the United States, the DOGE cost reduction committee, led by Elon Musk, causes excitement in the United States. According to Bolton, the Republicans actually see the state apparatus too great. There is a lot of support from the population to reduce government spending. But to really move something, you have to go to the social budget, pension insurance and health insurance for the needy and the old, explained Bolton. There is little to save with the reduction in development aid.
Musk should now also look for a waste of money in the Ministry of Education and Defense. “In the congress there are many Republicans who still stop in public and wonder what Musk is still planning, especially with the Pentagon,” Bolton warned. The Republicans in the congress hesitated to continue with Trump.
