What is the following? – 136 days free: Austria politics in ruins

Date:

Rien ne va plus! What has been popping up for days has been a reality since Wednesday afternoon: the coalition negotiations between FPö and ÖVP have finally failed. Back to the beginning, Alexander van der Bellen is now the saying that the federal president wants new discussions with all party leader what a future government should look like. The fact is: the domestic policy of Austria is 136 days after the elections of the National Council in Ruins.

From the start, government formation after the elections of the National Council was complicated on September 29. Initially, Karl Nehammer received the order to form the government as a Baas.

After the failure of the conversations between the ÖVP, Spö and Neos and the resignation in Nehammer, it was the turn of the election winner Herbert Kickl (FPö). FPö and ÖVP led coalition negotiations for five weeks. Initially it looked like a fast setting, finally a joint savings package of around 6.4 billion euros was presented in mid -January.

Blue-Black: After the savings package it was only downhill
But then the blue-black negotiating engine stuttered more and more. For example, statements by ÖVP -Baas Christian Stocker made up moods at the FPö, who claimed a course correction of freedom in a media back discussion. The demand for a bank load from the FPö also resulted in inflammatory material. As you know, the negotiations were interrupted last week, after which there was even about two days of full radio silence between the negotiating peaks.

There were also wild quarrels with regard to the department division. Kickl was always on both ministries: finance and interior. The ÖVP, in turn, presented the blue a paper where common basic lines of the board had to be determined.

ÖVP attacked FPö: “Powerrausch”
Statements from the Chamber of Commerce Mahrer may have flooded the barrel on Tuesday. The black negotiator struck the FPö sharply: “Austria is a democracy and democratic basic principles are important. If you are not ready to consume and are only in the power of power, you cannot get a government fit.

As a final attempt at salvation, both by FPö and ÖVP on Wednesday, new suggestions for the department division were made again, each of which was immediately rejected from the other side.

Kickl has returned the order for the formation of the government
A final personal meeting between Stocker and Kickl had only taken place on Wednesday at the request of Van der Bomens. But this also took less than an hour and did not make a breakthrough. Kickl finally returned the order for the formation of the government after a mathematical possible coalition with the spö had been hopeless because of the content of differences.

Four and a half months have passed since the National Council elections – but there is still no new government.

Failing government negotiations extremely rare
Until now, the failure of concrete government negotiations has been extremely rare. Most coalition negotiations that started after a total of 24 national council elections from the second republic were successfully completed. Before the current series of failed negotiations, coalition negotiations were only terminated without success – the most recently between the ÖVP and the Greens in 2002.

New elections, minority government, expert government or coalition?
What is the following? Van der Bellen wants to explore the possible options. In the coming days he will have conversations with “politicians and politicians” – probably the party leader – what a future government should look like, Van der Bellen said Wednesday evening. He showed no preferences for one of the four options – he called a new election, a minority government with the tolerance of parliament, an expert government or a coalition of various parties. “How this government is composed does not play a role for me,” emphasized the federal president, who found a plea for the search for compromises in his speech.

Kickl wants rapid elections
Van der Bellen has already received a suggestion from Kickl. As he announced in a press conference on Wednesday evening, he advised that the head of state quickly started new elections. He was convinced that it needs clear circumstances as quickly as possible instead of a pats. “Today is not every day, I come back, no doubt,” the Blue quoted the Pink Panther.

Stocker excludes dismissal
On the early Wednesday evening the ÖVP Federal Party Board met online. Stocker excluded a resignation as leader of the federal party after the failure of the coalition negotiations, after all, he was not instructed to form a government and was also not responsible for their failure.

Spö, Neos and Greens open for discussions
Social -Democrats, Neos and Greens are now open to coalition interviews and have also not excluded the support of an expert government. The country needs stability, the budgetary situation makes Austria challenges, said Spö Boss Andreas Babler. “The ability to act must therefore stand up to a standstill, the state interest is confronted with the interests of the party.”

Kogler wishes new ÖVP-Spö-approach
For Neos Boss Beate Meinl Reisinger, “A government that is able to” be “quickly formed”, everyone has to jump over his shadow “. Green boss Werner Kogler was also open to all variants. He appealed to ÖVP And Spö to approach again, because a possible government would also need a majority of Kogler.
