In November Christopher Drexler and his ÖVP lost first place in the styric state elections on the FPö – and then pulled the consequences. At the moment the Black ex-state chief is “only” second president of the State Parliament. Now there is a “second job”.
The former Styrian ÖVP boss for the time that is limited for six months, could strengthen the relationships with the United States on behalf of the Industrial Association and make contacts on site. Until now there has been no such position, but it had become necessary because of the current political circumstances in the United States, ie the Trump government.
Drexler is very USA-Affin, he had already followed countless stays in the United States and also followed on the spot. The 53-year-old is generally considered a liberal, intellectual and cosmopolitan black, even if he has tried to serve the right wing in recent years. He had no political success with this: in the state elections in November the ÖVP crashed from 36 to 26.8 percent and landed in second place behind the FPö.
After just over two years as a Governor – Drexler took over the office in the summer of 2022 from Hermann Schützenhöfer – the resident of Graz had to free his office in the Graz Kasteel. He was still allowed to lead the government negotiations with the FPö, but on a memorable and partly chaotic Monday in December he was overdoors and inherited from Manuela Khom. She is now a deputy governor in Styria.
Drexler had to look at the pain of the loss of government function in the first state sessions. He soon announced that he wanted to refocus himself. Now he seems to have found a task. He has not avoided the spotlight in recent weeks, so he was a guest at Steirerball in Vienna and at the Nighttrace in Schladming.
