The Three -Day Munich Security Conference (MSC) ended on Sunday with an emotional farewell. This year’s meeting showed that “this America lives on another star under Trump,” said the outgoing head of the event, Christoph Heusgen.
The MSC has revealed the currently deep tensions between Europe and the US. Conference director Heusgen even spoke about a “European nightmare” and a “very clarifying conference”. He was concerned about developments in transatlantic relationships. Republican US senators would apparently have carefully responded for fear of Trump.
Europe and the US vary
The speech by JD Vance was particularly critical, which was verbally attacked Germany and the EU. VANCE accused the European governments of limiting large American technology companies and dealing with the AfD freedom of expression.
Decisions about the head of Europe?
In addition to the transatlantic crisis, the focus was also on the Ukraine war. Heusgen demanded Europe to play a central role in possible peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. “We have to show much more power,” he said. Europe should not only be at the negotiating table, but must also actively develop its own security plan for Ukraine.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), CDU Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz and the Ukrainian President Wolodyymyr Senskyj also emphasized in their contributions that Europe should be involved in all conversations about a possible end of the war. There are no negotiations between the United States and Russia without Ukraine and the European allies.
Former NATO Secretary -General takes over
The 61st MSC was the last led by Christoph Heusgen. He had taken over the chair in 2022, just a few days before the Russian march to Ukraine. His term was therefore strongly formed by the war. His predecessor Wolfgang Ischinger and countless high -off participants recognized Heusgen’s work in recent years.
The former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg is intended as his successor. Under its leadership, the MSC will continue to deal with the changing geopolitical situation and the future of transatlantic relationships.
