Has the European Union taken over the new weapon plan? Brussels only wants to grant loans for military equipment when a large part of the components comes from Europe. However, some Member States are afraid of bureaucratic horror scenarios.
The colossal armored plan can release up to 800 billion euros, which must flow into the protection of the continent. The motto is: buy more, buy better, buy together – and buy European! The business location of Europe is also intended to take advantage of the enormous upgrade. But there are doubts about whether the planned project can manage the planned projects at all.
What is it about?
The EU is planning to set up a fund called “Safe”. The pot is expected to include 150 billion euros that flow to EU countries and other partner states as long-term loans. The fund is intended as a “kickstarter” for a collective purchasing.
With the money, Member States could buy air and missile weather systems, artillery systems, missiles, ammunition, drones or cybera weather systems. The price is of course subject to strict guidelines-with the aim of resolving Europe on the dependence on American arms deliveries.
“We don’t do this to wage war, but to prepare for the worst and to defend peace in Europe,” said Brüssel’s Chief Diplomat Kaja Kallas. She also emphasized that the United States under Donald Trump was no longer able to lead the “free world”.
What’s in the small print?
The safe proposal stipulates that at least 65 percent of the eligible components must come from the EU. Exceptions apply to Ukraine, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Weapon systems, the construction of which is in other countries, would be excluded. It is striking that Great -Britain has not yet been on the Brussels shopping list. According to Kallas, however, an integration of the Kingdom is being worked on.
This means that if you want to buy weapons from the US or Great Britain, you will not have access to the safe fund. In the worst case, urgently required armored transactions can be postponed because they do not meet the rate of origin. Eastern European Member States such as Poland and the Baltic countries warn that Europe could delay due to strict rules. France, one of the largest armal producers in Europe, is considered an architect of the Regulation.
Most NATO weapons come from the US.
A glance at the statistics shows that the safe rules can become a stumbling block: the European NATO countries have more than doubled the import of their weapons in the past five years. According to a report from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, more than 60 percent of the arms deliveries came from the United States during this period.
Experts are afraid of enormous bureaucratic exertion. Complex weapon systems consist of hundreds of component manufacturers and buyers should prove in detail in the future that their device meets the safe guidelines. What is planned like a “kickstarter” can quickly become a “brake block”. Poland Premier Donald Tusk has already announced that he wanted to fight the controversial quota on the current EU top.
