The European minister Claudia Plakolm (ÖVP) will travel to the Czech Republic on Thursday and meet her counterpart Martin Dvořák. Austria and the Czech Republic would maintain close friendly relationships, the minister said.
“We are neighbors, partners and friends in the heart of Europe,” Plakolm said in the Run -up for the visit. It wants to strengthen the relationship with neighboring countries, in particular the “Central 5”. The informal cooperation between Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia was launched in 2020 by the then Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexander Schallenberg (ÖVP).
On Tuesday, Plakolm participated for the first time in the meeting of the European EU Minister in Brussels. There she joined an initiative launched by the Czech Republic to save the American foreign broadcaster Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. US President Donald Trump had granted the cash tap on the broadcaster, now the EU was able to enter as a financial engine.
“Support for Ukraine unchanged”
In Brussels, the minister said that the support of Austria remains unchanged for Ukraine. There may be no negotiations without the country of war and about European security without the EU. Austria would be available as a location and mediator for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. Austria also supports a security and defense partner with Great Britain.
In exchange with the MPs, the focus was on the situation in Ukraine and European Defense.
