The three government parties are not defined in the new flashing debate on a change in the basic military service. They wait for suggestions from an expert group.
Everything is possible, but nothing has been solved. This is the starting point for the upcoming reform of military service. The fact that something will change is certainly given the new threat situation, this is undisputed in all three government parties. “We cannot combat the new threats with old recipes,” said Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner in an interview with the “Krone”.
“We have stated in the government program that an expert committee, with the integration of the entire stakeholders, in particular the economy and industry, must ensure that we can also be fully used. This is especially important that we develop alternative models.”
Spö and Neos also want to wait for the suggestions of the expert committee used. What ultimately comes out is open. It is possible both 6 plus 2 (6 months basic service, plus 2 months militia exercises) and alternative suggestions.
“Know that there are problems with the militia”
“We know that there are problems with the militia and therefore also for a refreshment. There is also a whole list of projects in the government program to make the militia more attractive: for example, improvements in insurance coverage, pension and service legislation or that qualifications are also more easily recognized in the civil profession,” says De Spö.
A pure expansion of military service, on the other hand, is not part of the government program. For their part, the NEOs emphasize that Austria’s defense policy has not been disconnected from the rest of Europe. The security policy developments in the EU must be taken into account when reorganizing.
