After the last increase in South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, the criminal trial against the former head of state was opened.
The public prosecutor accuses the 64-year-old that he found a rebellion and guilty of the betrayal last December.
Yoon himself has always rejected the allegations as unfounded. At the start of the trial in the morning (local time), the indictment was first read by the public prosecutor before the accused was given the opportunity to comment. According to media reports, the first lists of witnesses can also take place on Monday.
In the case of a guilty judgment, Yoon threatens a life sentence, theoretically it would also be possible to impose the death penalty.
Proclaimed war law at the beginning of December
At the beginning of December, Yoon – still president at that time – unexpectedly declared the War Law in the course of an escalating budget dispute and therefore overthrown the country in a state crisis. Among other things, he accused the opposition of infiltrated by communist troops and sympathy for North Korea and China. The 64-year-old did not provide proof of these allegations.
