The European Union wants to increase its financial support for the Palestinian Authority with a new help package of around 1.6 billion euros. The money is intended to promote reforms within the corrupt Palestinian government.
The AIDs must flow in three years and are linked to reforms, said the EU commissioner Dubravka Suica Reuters who are responsible for the middle -east. “We want you to reform yourself, because without reforms you will not be strong and credible enough to be a conversation partner, not only for us, but also for Israel,” Suica said.
The Palestinian government is criticized for corruption and bad governance. It only has a limited self -distribution over some areas on the West Bank under Israeli military crew. The radical-Islamic Hamas is located in the Gaza Strip.
EU largest donors of the authority
Of the new aid package, 620 million euros are planned for financial support and a reform of the Autonomy Authority. 576 million euros would be foreseen for “resilience and reconstruction” of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. 400 million euros would come as a loan from the European Investment Bank.
The EU is the largest donor in the Palestinians because the United States have largely hired its humanitarian efforts. In the past twelve years, the average EU support for the Palestinian authority has been around 400 million euros, Suica said. And therefore considerably more pumped than Arab states in the enclave.
EU representatives have repeatedly expressed the hope that the Palestinian authority will take over the Gaza Strip administration after the end of the war between Israel and Hamas. “The EU will invest in important infrastructure and at the same time offer humanitarian aid and support to refugees,” said EU Chief Diplomatin Kaja Kallas on the X.
The right-wing religious government of the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has so far rejected this, as well as the purpose of the EU of a two-state solution.
