The US government has responded with sharp criticism of media reports that Amazon wants to show how strong the import duties under President Donald Trump influence the prices of products. The White House sees the step as a targeted attack – and as a political insult.
“This is an enemy and political action by Amazon,” said Karoline Leavitt, spokeswoman for the White House Press, on Tuesday during a press conference. She had previously talked about the reports with President Trump.
The reason for the criticism is a media report that Amazon intends to indicate directly on the product page, how high the price supplement caused by Trump’s rates is. So far, Amazon has not made any explanation.
“Why not already done under bidder?”
Leavitt was upset about the timing of the measure. “Why didn’t Amazon do that when the bidet government driven to the highest level in 40 years?” She asked. Moreover, she referred to a Reuters report from 2021, in which Amazon was attributed to a partnership with a Chinese propaganda organ.
In this context, Leavitt said: “That is not surprising.” For them, the price price is another argument to buy American products and to reduce critical supply chains to the US.
Americans are seriously worried about rates
Amazon’s measure is falling in a time -growing public concern about the economic consequences of Trump’s trade policy. According to a current survey by the AP News Agency and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, around 60 percent of Americans are “very” or “extremely” about increasing living.
Half of the respondents fear an early recession. Moreover, many expect the rates of Trump to considerably increase prices.
Customers pay the invoice
Economists point out that the costs of import rates are usually borne by importers and then passed on to consumers. Trump, on the other hand, claims that countries like China pay the rates directly. The discussion about who ultimately bears economic taxes is not new – and receives new explosiveness through Amazon’s price transparency.
The consequences of trade policy must also be noticeable within the company. According to Reuters, around 60 percent of the turnover at Amazon comes from independent dealers who often depend on import from China. Some dealers have already withdrawn or hesitate from actions such as the “Prime Day” to participate.
Is Bezos against Trump?
Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, recently approached the Republican camp again. In December he was invited for a dinner with Trump in his club Mar-A-Lago. Leavitt left open whether the new procedure of Amazon has an impact on the relationship between the former president and the group.
When asked, she only said: “I will not talk about the relationship between the President and Jeff Bezos.”
