The painting is worth a maximum of 50 million euros – now a child has scratched it. In an “unattended moment” the child rented a hand in a Rotterdam museum, as the museum spokesperson says. Especially unfavorable: it can be difficult to restore the work.
“In the lower part of the painting, small scratches are visible in the unpaved color layer,” says a spokesperson compared to the BBC station.
“Modern Unmistanted” paintings such as these are “particularly susceptible to damage,” explains Sophie Mcaloone, head of the restoration department of Fine Art Restoration Company, the BBC. She says: “In this case, scratching the upper color layers can have a significant impact on the work of work.”

In particular, it is the painting “Gray, Orange on Chestnut Brown, no. 8” by the American artist Mark Rothko. This is exhibited at the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
Recovery can be difficult
Compared to “Algemeen Dagblad”, the museum says: “In collaboration with experts, we are currently investigating what the next steps are for treatment. We assume that the work can be shown again in the future.”
Jonny Helm, marketing manager at the Plower & Smith art that causes service, is of the opinion that it can be a challenge to restore the painting. Because the mixture of pigments, resins and gluing is complex. The museum has not commented on who must be liable for the damage.
