Germany prevents all migrants from entering the illegal entry since Wednesday afternoon, even if they apply for asylum. The new Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) ordered this shortly after he took office. This seals the end of the liberal and open border policy of ex-channel Angela Merkel (CDU). And there is already praise for this decision.
With a letter to the boss of the federal police, Dobrindt wore the Merkel era on Wednesday (after 3533 days). At least in the shelter area.
Dobrindt draws instruction from Merkel Era
The CSU politician has withdrawn an oral instruction from former internal minister Thomas de Maizière (CDU) from 2015, who has since allowed asylum seekers to enter Germany without valid documents since then.
In memory: in September 2015, Merkel decided that asylum seekers who are stuck in Hungary were allowed to travel to Germany for humanitarian reasons. As a result, the number of asylum seekers – especially from Syria – increased considerably. A rejection on the German border was discussed at that time in the Ministry of the Interior, but was never implemented.
Stricter border controls are now accompanied by the new regulation, extra police services are placed at the German external boundaries. Although it must be noted that the German border controls to Poland, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Austria and other neighboring countries were expanded in October 2023.
“Signal in the world and in Europe”
With the new tightening, Dobrindt wants to ensure a further decrease in illegal migration. It is not about rejecting everyone of tomorrow, but “that we reduce the figures,” he said. Pregnant women, children and other family members of vulnerable groups would not be rejected, Dobrind said. He is concerned with a “signal in the world and in Europe” that “politics has changed in Germany”. The aim of the new German government is that the external boundaries of the EU are protected and migrants are not waved to Germany.
“Step well, but legally risky”
The migration law expert Daniel Thym of the University of Konstanz believes that “The Minister of the Interior offers immediately. The scheme leads to a system change. The central difference until the last ten years is also rejection of asylum seekers,” said the 69-year-old. But it is clear that the step is “legal risky”. Because courts could stop. But the step is still “equal”.
“German government hopes for Domino effect”
According to him, it now depends on how neighboring countries react and whether the hoped -for -fringing effect occurs. Moreover, the new black and red government had to reorganize asylum policy in Germany and Europe. “The federal government hopes for a Domino effect. If one country after the other starts to reject asylum seekers, Berlin’s regulation could fundamentally change the entire au ash system.
The CDU, CSU and SPD coalition agreement had been agreed: “In coordination with our European neighbors, we will also make rejections against the common limits, even in the case of asylum requests.” Dobrindt now said, “We keep our neighbors in close coordination.”
Austria not impressed
Gerhard Karner is still not impressed by Dobrindt’s decision: “Austria welcomes Germany in the fight against tractor Mafia and illegal migration,” emphasized the Minister of the Interior of Austria.
And he added to the ÖVP politician: “We assume that the German authorities will adhere to the European legal system for all measures taken.” Austria is located in all measures near the German authorities. In the past, Karner had repeatedly announced that Austria would not tolerate illegal rejection.
