While the fences are drawn in Austria and many other EU countries, Spain is going to be completely different and therefore causes violent discussions: hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants should be able to work soon and live by law.
Since Tuesday, new migration laws have been in force in Spain, making it easier for around 900,000 people without a residence status to get a work and residence permit. Illegals who have had to wait three years so far can submit an application after two years.
Dramatic location on the labor market
The step with the dramatic situation on the labor market is justified: people simply miss people in construction, gastronomy, nursing and agriculture. At the same time, people want to fight against the shadow economy, causing the state to lose billions of tax revenues.
Migration minister Elma Saiz openly admits that Spain is swimming “against the EU stream” with this step and is ready to defend the new model in Brussels.
Second chance of lost papers
But it goes even further: the reunification of the family is simplified, children can be a maximum of 26 years old, even people who have lost their papers, get a second chance to legalize.
Immigration organizations welcome many points – but also criticize that many migrants continue to live illegally for two years before they can register. Asylum seekers are also partially affected: if you are rejected, you must wait two years before a new application is possible.
Conservative opposition rejects progress
The Socialist Government also leads to a progress, which is intended to guarantee around 470,000 illegal legal residence towards the end of the year – an “extraordinary control process”. The conservative opposition already speaks of a “magnet for illegal” and rejects the advance violently.
Thousands of not -Considered minors
At the same time, the situation with the external boundaries of Spain continues: in the previous year, more than 46,000 African boat refugees reached the Canary Islands. The Exclave Ceuta and Melilla are also overburdened – the care of thousands of non -compiled minors ensures Zofff between the central government and the regions.
Show surveys: For many Spaniards, illegal migration is one of the most urgent problems. But the reality remains: the Spanish pension system can collapse without immigration. Studies expect several million employees in the coming decades.
