A change in Poland – Anti -Germany amateur boxers becomes president

Date:

After the presidential election in Poland, the winner is certain: the right -wing conservative Karol Nawrocki will lead the country. The 42-year-old was able to win the extremely scarce race against the Testeuropean Warsaw mayor Rafal Trzaskowski (53).

The choice shows a deep political division in Poland, especially between city and country. The historian Nawrocki is considered political inexperienced: the victory of the 42-year-old can influence the course of Poland in the EU and to NATO.

A stir and sympathies for some voters – caused his past always at a young age as an amateur boxer and as a bouncer during his studies in a luxury hotel with possible contacts in the red light environment. Two weeks ago in the first vote, Nawrocki and further right -wing -candidates had received a clear majority together.

Legal conservative piss candidate
Nawrocki is officially independent, but started as a candidate in court conservative PIs, the largest opposition party in Poland. The PIS ruled the country from 2015 to 2023. It brought the judiciary to the scandal of politics and was in the long term clinch with Brussels because of this intervention.

In 2023, a Center-Linkse Alliance came to the government again: former EU council chairman Donald Tusk returned as Prime Minister. But it remained with a permanent dispute with President Andrzej Duda, who also comes from the PIs and was not allowed to compete after ten years. Duda Braked Tusk’s reform plans with its strong veto legislation. The prime minister hoped to dissolve this blockade with the liberal Trzaskowski at the top of the state.

Warsaw is considered an important advocate of Ukraine
Poland is an important proponent of Ukraine attacked by Russia. The country, with nearly 38 million inhabitants, also sees itself threatened and upgraded by Moscow. Unlike in Slovakia, Hungary or Romania, there is no serious politician in Poland who represents Pro -Russian positions. In the most important question of foreign policy, support for Ukraine, Duda and Tusk have always brought together. This can change with Nawrocki, which is, for example, against a possible NATO intersection of Ukraine.

While Tusk, as head of the government, relaxes the relationship between Warsaw and Berlin, Nawrocki is previously representing the piss hostile line of the PIs and searched for the proximity of US President Donald Trump in the election campaign. He renewed the demand for reparations for the damage caused by Nazi Germany in Poland in the Second World War. Nawrocki, he emphasized that, does not want Poland to be prescribed by the EU.

Choice reveals a deep distribution of Poland
On the election evening, a first prediction initially saw Trzaskowski in front, and the 53-year-old social scientist was already an election winner. However, he is considered very far to the left, even in his political camp and was a red cloth for many voters in Catholic rural areas of the country.

The individual results, which had been in -depth at night, demonstrated the deep political division of Poland, which has achieved great economic successes in recent years. Trzaskowski won in the big cities such as Warsaw, Krakow and Lodz, who mainly benefited from the Upsswing. Nawrocki was ahead in smaller cities and the rural regions of Poland.

A reason for the defeat of Trzaskowski could be that the liberal and left camp did not exhaust its voter potential. The turnout was a good three percentage points higher at 71.7 percent than in the previous presidential elections five years ago. But when the victory over the PIs in the parliamentary elections of 2023 had given up a record number of 74.4 percent of voters.

President with abundant powers
“We will save and save Poland. We will not allow Donald to be strengthened,” said Nawrocki after announcing first predictions. Until now he was director of the Institute for National Memory (IPN), a kind of Polish counterpart of the now dissolved Stasi documents in Germany.

The president serves five years in Poland. The head of state has more powers than the federal president in Germany and not only represents the country for the outside world. The president also has an impact on foreign policy, he mentions the head of the government and the cabinet and is a high commander of the Polish forces in the case of war. Above all, he can make life difficult for the government with his veto legislation.
