The US Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against California, because the US state continues to allow transgender athletes to participate in women’s sports teams. Female athletes at educational institutions in California are “unfair competition and ruthless threat to the participation of men in sports teams for women,” the ministry said on Wednesday.
It accuses California to break a relevant law. This prohibits “gender discrimination” in educational programs that are financed with federal funds. The Ministry of Education of California allowed the “illegal discrimination of female athletes through the approval of male participants,” said it.
California in the sights of the Republicans in Washington
In April, the Ministry of Justice had already brought a lawsuit against the state of Maine because transgender athletes can participate in competitions for women. The government of US President Donald Trump decided to reduce the federal funds for public schools in the northeastern state. At the time, Minister of Justice Pam Bondi said that Minnesota and California could be the following countries against which the ministry is going on.
Trump sent the National Guard to California
The procedure of the Ministry of Justice against California is the last escalation in the constant dispute between the government of Republican President Trump and the democratically governed state. Trump had sent thousands of soldiers from the National Guard to Los Angeles last month to suppress protests against the arrest of migrants without papers by federal officials. The governor of California, Gavin Newsom, spoke mainly about peaceful protests and criticized the troops.
