The trial of former vice-chancellor and FPÖ leader Heinz-Christian Strache and co-defendant real estate entrepreneur Siegfried Stieglitz for corruption and bribery is currently ongoing in the Vienna Regional Court. Three witnesses have been called and the testimony of Rene Schimanek, private secretary to Norbert Hofer (FPÖ) when he was Minister of Infrastructure under Turquoise Blue, is likely to be relevant to the proceedings.
According to the indictment, Strache Stieglitz was allegedly given a commissionership in Asfinag for donations divided into several tranches to the FPÖ-affiliated association “Austria in Motion”. Schimanek is said to have passed on a corresponding list of names of possible FPÖ candidates for committees in state-related companies, which Stieglitz also ended up on.
Strache and Stieglitz deny allegations
The court must clarify whether this corresponded to Strache’s wishes and whether the then FPÖ boss helped his befriended real estate entrepreneur in exchange for a financial favor. Strache and Stieglitz deny the charges against them. If the negotiations go according to plan, the verdicts can be expected next Friday.
