Nearly Lost Toe – Norbert Hofer: “Could see my bone”

Date:

The third president of the National Council, Norbert Hofer (FPÖ), was lucky in a swimming pool accident that at first glance didn’t seem so dramatic. When the 51-year-old jumped into his swimming pool in Pinkafeld, Burgenland, on a beautiful summer day, he injured his left big toe. But before he knew it, the FPÖ politician had to go to the emergency room…

When he jumped off the edge of the pool, Hofer caught his big toe between the pool steps and the edge. “Since my paragliding accident, I haven’t felt any pain in my foot,” Hofer explained in an interview with krone.at. The FPÖ politician crashed with a paraglider in 2003, seriously injuring his spine. Therefore, the dramatic consequences of jumping into the cool water only became apparent upon closer inspection.

“My toe is only attached to a piece of tissue, I could look at my bone,” Hofer described the serious injury. So instead of a relaxing bathing day, the motto was: accident ambulance! It was only there that it became clear how serious the injury was and the doctors initially feared that they would not be able to save the toe.

“No Anesthetic Needed”
As he describes these dramatic hours, the former FPÖ boss can smile again: “No anesthesia was needed because I don’t feel any pain in my foot.” The incident happened a week ago, it is now clear that the toe has healed well. “I’ll have to take it easy for another week and then I’ll take a few more days of vacation,” says Hofer, adding self-deprecatingly, “I’m just replacing illness with accidents.”
