Brunner on rumours: – “Karl Nehammer is an excellent chancellor”

Date:

After the latest polls were anything but rosy, there were rumors of transfers surrounding Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP). “Party miracle worker” Treasury Secretary Magnus Brunner was also traded as a successor. But he has no intention of changing jobs, as he assures…

Like Nehammer, Brunner called the speculation Tuesday in Ö1’s “Morgenjournal” “an artificial summer debate” in which he did not participate. “We have several crises that we have to overcome and fight, we do that every day.”

“Excellent Chancellor and Crisis Manager”
Karl Nehammer is “an excellent chancellor and crisis manager, we need something like that in these times”, Brunner said behind the head of government: “I am the finance minister by his side and I want to leave it at that.”

It was previously speculated in various media that the ÖVP wanted to replace Nehammer due to poor poll numbers. After a temporary peak under Sebastian Kurz, the People’s Party recently ranked third behind the FPÖ in a poll. The polls are also quite nervous at the state level: just over two months before the state elections in Tyrol, the local ÖVP would drop below 30 percent over the weekend, which would be 15 percentage points less than in the 2018 election.

Characters are unlikely to transfer
Nehammer, who is anchored in the powerful Lower Austrian ÖVP, took over the party in December in the turbulence surrounding the Postenschacher affair, which Kurz is being investigated, and was only elected 100 percent party chairman in May. Another argument against a transfer is that it would be difficult for the ÖVP to install a fourth chancellor within months of Sebastian Kurz, Alexander Schallenberg and Nehammer.
