“Of course” – diocese to Kickl: no shaking of the church contribution

Date:

FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl on Sunday appealed to Cardinal Christoph Schönborn to indefinitely suspend payment of church fees amid extreme price increases – krone.at reports. The Archdiocese of Vienna immediately rejected it.

“Especially as head of the church, he should know how poverty and existential fears can affect people – and for many of them every penny they have counts or not,” the FPÖ leader said via broadcast Cardinal Christoph Schönborn. According to Kickl, it is clear to him that people can be ‘actively liberated’, but that is especially difficult for the elderly.

“Years of Practice”
The Archdiocese of Vienna reacted to this, referring to “the practice of many years in the Catholic Church”, according to which the individual situation of the donor is taken into account when calculating the ecclesiastical contribution. “Of course nothing will change in the current crisis or in the future,” emphasized the press service of the Archdiocese of Vienna, according to Kathpress. In seeking individual solutions to emergencies, those responsible for church contributions are “of course aware that church contributions are a burden for many people,” it said.

Kickl addressed the appeal not only to Schönborn, but also to the Bishop of the Evangelical Church, Michael Chalupka, and the head of the Old Catholic Church, Bishop Heinz Lederleitner.
