Athletic’s match was a record

Date:

The entry registered in San Mamés on Sunday against Valencia surpassed all those registered throughout the previous year on a numerical level. As soon as the second half started, the rojiblanco club, through the Bilbao stadium’s own video scoreboard, measured the number of attendees at 43,333 people. The official record of this match against the squad collected on the website of the Ibaigane entity, however, raised the final tally to 43,417.

A change that is relevant, as this latest record exceeds all assists recorded at San Mamés throughout last season. The match that arouses the greatest expectations in the rojiblanco stadium in the 2021-22 campaign is Athletic-Atlético de Madrid. That day, a total of 43,398 people gathered in Bilbao’s stadium. Last Sunday against Valencia, according to official figures from Athetic itself, there were 19 more spectators than Simeone’s last visit.

Beyond this record, what is really important for the interest of the Bilbao club is the change in trend. After the general confinement due to the coronavirus and the holding of meetings behind closed doors, the tickets in San Mamés are alarmingly decreasing compared to the ones before the COVID. The capacity recorded against Mallorca on the first day of this League, without further ado, was the fifth best entry of the previous campaign including the regular tournament itself and the Cup.

The aforementioned visit from Athletic was followed in order of influx by Real Madrid (42,722, in Liga), Valencia 41,091, in Liga) and Real (40,698) and Real Madrid itself in the Cup (39,841). Mallorca, in the recently released 2022-23 campaign, reached 39,747 spectators. Against the vermilion squad, for example, more spectators at the beginning of this season than against Barça in the round of 16 of the last edition of the KO tournament (37,287).

There is a way to go

As an anecdote, it is worth noting that against the Barça club itself, in the cup butt of the quarterfinals before the competition was delayed due to COVID, San Mamés welcomed 49,154 spectators. Days later, against Granada in the semi-finals, the registered entry was 48,149 people.

The increase in capacity in the popular entertainment and the Gazte Abonoa stands and the initiatives adopted by the club to try to avoid free seats in San Mamés are beginning to bear fruit, although the club has a long way to reach the pre- record of the pandemic.
