Date:

Fight and passion: these are the words Serena Williams chose this Friday to define her career. And the American legend put what could have been the end of his career in a new proof of this, when he surrendered against the Australian Ajla Tomljanovic at the United States Open after a long battle of more than three hours, the longest of his career in New York.

Serena Williams (Saginaw, Michigan, September 26, 1981) left tennis considered the greatest ever, with the ability to win 73 titles and 23 ‘big’but above all to break down social barriers and inspire a new generation of stars with his charisma.

His first US Open title came in 1999. and this Friday, 23 years later, the Arthur Ashe dance floor was filled to the last seat to attend the ‘last dance’ of the American legend.

Her final match set the all-time attendance record for one day at the US Open and Williams honored the promise to the end. He canceled out five match points before falling to Tomljanovic.

Previously, she beat Montenegrin Danka Kovinic and Estonian Anett Kontaveit in the first round., number two in the world, in second. He became the first player over forty years old to beat a rival who was part of the ‘top-3’ ranking.

Among the celebrities who attend the Arthur Ashe track these days are politicians, such as former US President Bill Clinton (1993-2001), filmmaker Spike Lee, former skier Lindsey Vonn or golfer Tiger Woods, among many others.

I remember many things. For example the fight. I am a fighter. I think I gave, and continue to give, something to tennis. My intensity and obvious passion, is a very good word. I continued despite the ups and downs. I am very grateful for these moments and for being Serena,” she said in the post-match press conference.

Born on September 26, 1981 in Saginaw, a small town of 56,000 inhabitants in the state of Michigan (USA), Serena grew up with her main role model at home, her sister Venus, who is just over a year apart.

He moved with his family to Compton (California) at the age of four, a city known for the danger of its streets, but at the same time marked the beginning of his legend.

There he began working with his sister Venus on the advice of his father Richard and began a journey that also took him to West Palm Beach, Florida (USA), where the whole family moved when he was nine years old, and the moment where his career began to take shape.

A professional since 1995, Serena’s career reached a turning point in 1999when he won his first US Open title.
