Nick Kyrgioseliminated in the quarterfinals of the United States Open, was even more “mentally devastated” after tasting the Wimbledon final in July and the Australian reckons “only the Grand Slam tournaments count”.
“Honestly, I’m not too interested in other tournaments. Now that I’ve had success in a Grand Slam, it’s like other tournaments don’t really matter,” Kyrgios told a news conference, dejected by his loss on Tuesday night .
“You improve, you come back, but in the Grand Slam it doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters is whether you win or lose. People don’t care if you played better, if you lost 6-4 in the fifth or if you played one of the best matches of the tournament. You lost… That’s all people remember from Grand Slams.”
“I think almost every other tournament of the year is a waste of time. We should only play Grand Slams, that’s what we’re worried about,” insisted the Australian.
After eliminating the defending champion and world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev in the round of 16, he considers his loss in the quarter-finals more “painful”.
“I feel like shit. I feel like I’ve let a lot of people down. I think I have to play in Tokyo… But I think only these four Grand Slam tournaments count. So I have to start over, I have to wait for the Australian Open. I’m destroyed,” he concluded.
