Pedro Acosta leads another Spanish treble

Date:

Second victory of the “Shark of Mazarrón” in 2022, three months after going through the operating room. Arón Canet and Augusto Fernández accompanied him on the podium

On June 21, Pedro Acosta broke the femur of his left leg while motocross and halted his progression in the intermediate category that had even made him dream of winning the title for the first time. He had to stay home for two races, spend the summer in a cast after surgery. And return with the chip changed, as the championship was more than a bubble bath. The goal from then on was to make miles with Moto2 and rediscover its best version. And this has arrived in Aragon.

While he still has a noticeable limp as a result of that surgery, the Murcian played in his best career in the category. He started sixth on the grid and moved up one position per lap to move into second on lap four. He had only his teammate, Augusto Fernández, in front of him, and it was questionable whether Acosta would act as a squire to the world championship leader or attack him. In just one round, the doubt was resolved. Once he reached his wheel, he took advantage of the slipstream on the straight and overtook it. He still had half a race ahead of him, but he didn’t hesitate either. He escaped and crossed the finish line alone. A victory that tasted even better than his debut in the intermediate category at Mugello. “This win is more important. It’s the second in Moto2, but the first after the injury and I needed it.”

Acosta ran with the Spanish flag through a MotorLand track that was falling apart and saw three Spaniards on the podium. And it is that behind the Murcian ended Arón Canet and the championship leader Augusto Fernández. The Balearic rider, who was very aggressive at the start and ran out of tires halfway through the race, took just three points from his main rival, Ai Ogura, who quietly finished fourth and is seven points behind in the overall standings. And the next race he will be the one racing at home next weekend, at the Motegi track. And the one who has already finished third in the standings is Canet, 37 points behind the leader and who refuses to give up in the battle for the title.
