Dorna Sports announced this Wednesday that he has started work “in a possible Indian Grand Prix in the futurewith the aim of bringing the MotoGP World Championship to the Indian subcontinent in the near future.”
The CEO of Dorna Sports, Carmelo Ezpeleta, visited India to meet with the authorities and the potential sponsor of the event, Fairstreet Sports. The Dorna delegation visited the Buddh International Circuit, just outside New Delhi, which will be the venue for a possible MotoGP event, and also visited Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, the region where the circuit is located, to meet with Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Mr. Yogi Adityanath, and the Minister of Industrial Development, Mr. Nand Gopal “Nandi”.
As the statement says, the visit ended with a presentation in New Delhi to local media and representatives of the motorcycling industry, which showed the country’s great expectations for MotoGP.
According to ‘Motorsport.com’, the event will be called the Bharat Grand Prix and could come, at the earliest, in 2024although Dorna is yet to speak of dates, and the agreement between both parties is for a 7-year extension.
“India is a big country and market, and especially important for the two-wheel industry and MotoGP as a sport. The Championship has a huge fan base there and to be able to hold a MotoGP event in India would be an incredible watch for us while allowing us to continue growing the sport in the region, which is very important for all our partners and the manufacturers especially because of the hundreds of millions of two-wheelers there,” said Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna. “We want to bring this project to fruition and bring these amazing MotoGP bikes to the race in front of the Indian fans,” he added.
