Manchester United, buoyed by a four-game winning streak in the Premier League after a terrible start to the season, return to action on Sunday after the international break, none other than visiting City in a derby with the Etihad as the stage.
Erik ten Hag, United’s manager, revealed today that Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial have returned to training after being absent in recent weeks, but captain Harry Maguire, who he defended from criticism over his mistakes on Monday at Wembley against Germany in a Nations League match (3-3), he returned injured from the English team.
Maguire, a starter for England, has been out of United’s last four games before the international break, but Ten Hag is confident he will return to form.
“I support Maguire because I believe in him”
“I have to support him. I support him because I believe in him,” Ten Hag said. “Look at his career, almost 50 games for England. At Leicester and now at Manchester United he is performing very well. He has great potential.”
Ten Hag insisted that “the players in the locker room, the manager, we all believe in him. That’s what I told him. I’m sure he’ll turn this around. I’m really convinced of that.”
Derby confidence
United, fifth to six points behind leaders Arsenal, have not played a Premier match since beating Arsenal on September 4 and now open a tight schedule of matches leading up to the World Cup in Qatar with the derby.
“I have played many derbies, I know this is the biggest game,” said Ten Hag. “We are convinced of our capabilities. If we act as a team, we can win. That is the belief we need and we need it even more on Sunday.”
