The Thai Somkiat Chantra conquered the first pole of his life in Moto2 in the best possible scenarios, the Chang International Circuit in Buriram and surrounded by his warm public who from the grandstand just above the pitlane celebrated the victory of Grill’s only Thai. He will be joined on the front row by Arbolino and his teammate Ai Ogura, the second-placed team in the World Cup, who will have a good advantage at the start against the leader Augusto Fernández, only eighth. Two points separate Fernández and Ogura before the start of the Moto2 race.
The first provisional pole was reserved by the local Somkiat Chantra with 1’35″625, which is close to the best free practice time of his teammate Ogura, and the good work carried out by the colleagues of the Idemitsu Team Asia’s Tony Arbolino joins to enter the provisional first line.
Already on the first lap, Arón Canet crashed at turn 5, his third crash at Buriram and when he barely pulled away. Pedro Acosta aborted a few laps at the start of qualifying and in his third Albert Arenas, provisionally 13th, went down and Joe Roberts crashed from the back with his motorcycle and suffered a nasty highside, although t he rose on his own feet. Yellow flags spoiled laps for several drivers and both Canet and Arenas had their option ended.
On his sixth lap, Pedro Acosta took fourth and was still two laps ahead with Alonso López sixth and Augusto Fernández, the championship leader, provisionally eighth, and with no slipstreams to help him improve. As the temperature and humidity increased, it became impossible to improve.
Augusto Fernández fell to this provisional third line and will share it with Joprge Navarro, ninth, with Manu González 14th, Jeremy Alcoba 14th, Albert Arenas 15th and Arón Canet 18th.
Via Q1 Vietti, Kubo, Bendsneyder and Roberts passed the playoffs leaving Sam Lowes by 17 thousandths; Aldeguer will start on the 21st and Ramírez on the 27th.
