Former Ulster winger Angus Kernohan talks about his historic year with Ealing Trailfinders

Date:

Former Ulster winger Angus Kernohan says he will forever “see” the memory of the Ealing Trailfinders story in the RFU tournaments.

A landslide in Richmond last weekend with a 6-10 ensured Ealing was injured in the second division of English rugby for the first time in the club’s 151-year history.

Kernohan, who joined the West London outfit from Ulster in 2020, played it nicely as he crossed the line with two tries to help mark a memorable day for the greens and whites.

And while Elling’s promotion to the Premier League is still serious by stadium standards, it doesn’t take away from the fun spectacle or sense of accomplishment on the pitch.

“The fact that we were facing our closest opponent in the last game of the season and the result that decided the championship was a really memorable day,” Kernohan said.

“It’s been a tough season, but in the end we got there and winning 6-10 and increasing the cup was great for everyone involved in this.

“It was a very special day and a memory I will keep for a long time.”

While living in west London, Kernohan, who played 21 games for Ulster – two years ago before leaving the county, said: “It’s a big change at Ballymina, but I love it.

The club is really ambitious and that was what we were aiming for at the start of the season, so joining them was very profitable.

“We’ve had a few setbacks during the campaign and lost four games along the way, but I think we showed our character and separated when the ending was the most important.”

Kernohan, now 23, was part of the Irish Under-20 team that won the Grand Slam during the 2019 Six Nations Championship.

The Balimina native is just one of a few Ealing names familiar to Irish and Ulster rugby fans.

Ulster players David O’Connor and Bill Johnston are part of Ben Ward’s squad, and former Ulster coach Kieran Campbell has just joined Elling’s backstage crew.

David Johnston, who played for Monster, former Connacht midfielder Stephen Kerns, and former Leinster defender Ken Keeler are also on Trailfinders.

“There are a lot of Irish men here,” Kernohan said.

“Kieran Campbell has been my manager at Ulster Academy since I was 14 and also my defensive coach for the Ireland Under-20s, so there are a lot of familiar faces.”

The Russian Football Union is expected to join Eling Premier, depending on the size of their stadium, by the end of the month.
