Getachew and Ayana, Ethiopian festival at the Amsterdam Marathon

Date:

the ethiopian Almaz Ayanaworld champion in 5,000m and Olympic champion in 10,000m on the track, premiered this Sunday in marathon with success in Amsterdam and the best score achieved by a debutant by far (2h17:20), lowered his compatriot Yalemzerf Yehualaw’s first time by three seconds this year in Hamburg (Germany).

Ayana left another popular rookie on the track, her compatriot, late in the race Genzebe Dibabaworld champion of the 1,500 in 2015, finishing second with a time of 2:18:05 in an exclusively Ethiopian podium rounded out by Tsehay Gemechu (2h18:59).

Both Ayana and Dibaba have had tough years due to injuries, which in Ayana’s case added to her happy motherhood success, but in their marathon debut both showed full recovery.

The rookies went through the middle of the race in 1h09:26 and at km 30 they formed a forward trio with Gemechu, who was the first to give way, while Ayana avoided a hypothetical sprint against a dangerous middle distance runner who attacked in last kilometer to get away from Dibaba.

Ayana moved down the road five years ago. In his first half marathon, he clocked 1h07:12 in New Delhi, and in his return to competition this year, after three inactivity, he qualified fifth in the Madrid half marathon with 1h08:22 and just finished third in the British Great North Run (other medium) in 1h07:10.

Dibaba has not run on asphalt for two years, since 2019 he won the Valencia half marathon in 1h05:18 and three weeks later the Barcelona 5k.

Amsterdam experienced an Ethiopian festival this Sunday, because the man who won was also born in the same African country. Tsegaye Getachew He won in an hour of 2h04:49 and five seconds before Titus Cyprutuswhich sought to restore to Kenya the hegemony it lost last year after nine consecutive victories.

Bazezew Asmare He climbed to the podium in third place with a time of 2:04:57. In the last two kilometers a quintet came to organize the final battle. Four other Kenyans, led by Abraham Kiptoo (2:05:04), qualified next.

With his victory in Amsterdam, Getachew broke a recent streak of Kenyan victories in major marathons: Eliud Kipchoge won in Berlin with a new world record (2h01:09), Amos Kipruto in London and Benson Kipruto in Chicago .
