The English West Ham secured a ticket to the round of 16 of the Conference League after Thursday extended its dominant run in the competition with a 1-0 win at Danish Silkeborg.
A bit of Argentina Manuel Lanzini, who converted a penalty awarded to Jamaican Michail Antonio in the 24th minute, was enough for the London team to become the only team to win all of their games in the Conference League.
This was not due to a lack of opportunities, as the Scotsman David Moyes had several clear chances to extend the score, but the “hammers” did not have their day in attack.
In particular, Algerian attacker Said Benrahma, who after brushing 2-0 in the first half with a header that went wide, saw how in 62 minutes a Danish defender took a shot from under the stick that seems destined for the purpose.
A lack of success West Ham, semi-finalist last year in the Europa League, was about to pay with a shot by Soren Tengstedt that forced the local goalkeeper, Frenchman Alphonse Areola, to show off.
But Silkeborg, who put the English in a lot of trouble in the first leg reflecting a tight 2-3, could not prevent the success of West Ham, who secured their presence in the round of 16 as group winners.
The Danish team will play its continuation of the competition on the last day at home against Anderlecht, in a match where the Nordics will only have a draw to prove their passage to the next round.
