Ancelotti: ‘It’s nonsense to say Benzema has been cleared’

The Real Madrid coach also fiercely defends Vinicius because “he seems to be a provocateur and is the one who gets the most fouls, blows and punches”

The uncompromising defense of Karim Benzema, whose absence from Cadiz raises some suspicions about whether the Frenchman is reserving himself for the Qatar World Cup, and of Vinicius, who is accused in some sectors of being a provocateur, marked Carlo’s press conference Ancelotti in the preview of Thursday’s league game against Cádiz, the last one before the break for the universal competition.

“The first disappointment is Karim because he arrives at the World Cup as Golden Ball without the minutes he needs to be in good shape; it is nonsense to say it has been erased,” concluded the Italian coach following Benzema’s fifth absence. “He has no serious problem. He did not stop because he continued to train individually, but his feelings were not good enough to play a match.”

Along these lines, Ancelotti made it clear that he has “at no time” thought that any of his players have thought of reserving for the World Cup because he “believes in his professionalism and seriousness”. “Until they get here, they’re going to give everything. I don’t see that in training, which is very competitive and in small field matches, where tackles are more common, they remove the leg. A month ago the team was doing very well and the World Cup was also very close,” he emphasized.

Close to Vinicius, Carletto regretted the situation. “It happens that it seems like he’s a provocateur and he’s the one who gets the most offenses, the most blows, the most nudges. This is the reality and it seems something else. You have to teach it to everyone, you don’t have to despise him in football or personally, but it is something that should happen to all players. Fair play is an important part of football,” said Ancelotti. Carletto, however, did not hide the need for the Brazilian to “improve” certain attitudes on the pitch.

Around the time of the team’s downturn, Ancelotti thinks it’s because the intensity has diminished from playing a lot of games. “You notice that against teams that don’t play in Europe and have fewer matches and can play at a higher level, that’s very normal. The difference is less noticeable when you play against those of European competitions,” he noted.

The fact that you have played little is not considered essential. “Rotation is an important aspect, but you also have to take the dynamics of the players into account. How am I going to remove Rodrygo or Valverde if they score all the matches, I think we rotated a lot,” he explained.

Finally, Ancelotti praised Marco Asensio, who surprisingly will be on Luis Enrique’s roster for Friday’s World Cup. “I think he has been the best in recent games, both in attendance and work. He has had a strong character in difficult times and I think what he is doing on the pitch is a well deserved award.”
