the australian Nick Kyrgiosracket number 22 in the ATP, won this Wednesday of 6-4 and 6-4 in British Cameron Norrie14 in the world, in a game of exhibition in Mexico which seems impossible to celebrate.
The event, called the Tennis Showdown and played in Mexico City, had to be postponed twice. The first date will be in September 2021 and its main match will be the confrontation between the Austrian Dominic Thiem and the Russian Andrey Rublev.
Thiem had to drop out due to injury and was replaced by Russian Daniil Medvedev, with a new date for March 2022, however Russia’s invasion of Ukraine forced this duel to be rescheduled for 2023.
For Wednesday’s match, Kyrgios’ original opponent was Frenchman Gael Monfils, who suffered an illness, forcing Norrie to replace him at the last minute.
Kyrgios, with home support on his side, prevailed 6-4 in the first set as he broke Norrie twice and fired six aces off a quick serve.
The Australian proved to dominate the altitude of Mexico City, above 2,200 meters above sea level, against a Briton who struggled to control the force of his serves and only managed to break Kyrgios once.
Nick Kyrgios stayed sharp in the second setand after breaking Norrie’s serve once, he cruised to a 6-4 victory in the second set of the game to win the friendly match.
Although Norrie dominated the altitude, he was unable to follow the play over the Australian net, which for most of the match dictated the pace of the game.
“Hello Mexico, this was a great event and great days. I hope to see you next year, hopefully at the Mexican Tennis Open in Acapulco,” said Kyrigios, after defeating Norrie.
Earlier, Mexicans Santiago González and Manuel Sánchez defeated the Colombian pair of Robert Farah and Juan Sebastián Cabal 7-6(3), 2-6 and 11-9, in a hard-fought doubles match.
González and Sánchez came from the last set, which was judged by the Colombians, however the support of the local fans gave the Mexicans the strength to defeat the semifinalist couple in the last US Open.
