Midterm elections “very tight” – re-election? Biden wants to make a decision in early 2023

Date:

After his Democrats’ failed debacle in the US midterm elections, President Joe Biden wants to make a decision early in 2023 whether he will run for the White House again. “In my opinion, we will make a judgment early next year,” the 79-year-old said on Wednesday. Democrats fared better than expected in Tuesday’s election. It is still unclear whether they will have a majority in the House of Representatives and/or the Senate.

At a press conference at the White House, Biden emphasized that Democrats can still defend the majority in the House of Representatives in addition to the Senate. “But it’s going to be very tight,” he admitted. It can take several days or even weeks before there is clarity. Republicans have a slightly greater chance of a majority in the House of Representatives. A single seat in the Senate, still up for grabs, could decide who will control the chamber currently closely controlled by Democrats. Before the election, Republicans were expected to win victories, but they did not materialize.

218 seats are needed for a majority in the House of Representatives. With the votes for which there are already results or predictions of the winner, the Republicans have come to 207 seats so far and the Democrats at 187. If you add them to the votes in which they now lead, there is a narrow majority of 220 votes for the Republicans. Kevin McCarthy, former minority leader of the Republican House, said he was confident of victory and told reporters at the Capitol that he spoke to Biden on the phone. McCarthy wants to become Speaker of the Chamber.

Runoff decides in Georgia
In the Senate, the decision is made in tight races in three highly competitive states. In Georgia, Arizona and Nevada, it was unclear on Thursday evening whether Democrats or Republicans would get the crucial senator posts. The particularly exciting race between incumbent Raphael Warnock and Republican challenger Herschel Walker in Georgia will not be decided in the second round until December 6. If the counting of the remaining votes in Arizona and Nevada does not bring clarity, only then can it be determined who will have the majority in the upper US Congress chamber in the future.

Biden stressed his willingness to work with Republicans. He is willing to compromise on many points. However, with his veto, he will block any Republican law that aims to ban abortion nationwide or undermine health care. Biden expressed hope that they would continue to support Ukraine after the election. The US is the country’s largest arms supplier. Republicans indicated ahead of the election that there would be no “blank check” for Ukraine if they won the majority. The US president objected that there were no blank checks from the Democrats either.

The 79-year-old reiterated that in principle he plans to run again in the 2024 presidential election. Ultimately, it is a family decision. “I think everyone wants me to leave, but we’ll discuss it.” He is in no rush and will not make a decision dependent on what his predecessor does.

Will Trump Compete — Or A Rival?
Former Republican President Donald Trump announced a “very big announcement” on the eve of the Nov. 15 election. It is expected to involve the announcement of a new presidential candidacy. The Republicans’ performance in the election, however, weakens Trump’s position, who ultimately supported defeated candidates like TV doctor Mehmet Oz in the race for a Senate seat. It was unclear what that might mean for Trump’s plans.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is considered a potential rival to Trump in the race for the Republican presidential nomination. He was confirmed in office with a clear majority – and came out of the big election day stronger.
